They smell funny and do not fade, but I think they must be replaced every 3 months as a toothbrush ...

Hm agreed. About every 3 months to work! :);)
I agree, I mean replace every 2 months. For now, rinse with warm water and antibacterial soap at least once during the week before, to prevent bacteria in them. Hope this helps.
